My friends call me Wendy. Nicknames are rare, but in Australia, one friend of mine calls me Wendos and my sister-in-law calls me Wendles. I like Wendy….
I love to sing. Always have. I remember selling tickets to my neighbours so that they could come listen to me sing along with the Carpenters in my living room. That’s another story.
A musical theatre background before microphones were used on stage gave me the booming voice I have today. My first role was as the Dew Fairy in Hansel and Gretel when I was seven years old. Typical high school productions were the guts of my work, and as a result of that hard work I was selected to participate in a touring theatre production across the western US. Other than that, I did community theatre, vaudeville-style productions, and started to study theatre at Arizona State University… I never finished… Australia beckoned.
My first band experience occurred when my father dusted off his saxophones and started a work band. April (a wife) and I (a daughter) were brought in to sing the songs so that these 40 year old boys could play some tunes. We sang stuff from the Doobie Brothers, Huey Lewis and the News, Eddie and the Cruisers, Sade, and Loggins and Messina, to name a few. I loved every minute of it.
When I moved back to Australia in late 2000, I would sing at some of the live music sessions when Ben was playing. Not satisfied to just sing, I picked up a guitar and started to strum. Ben taught me heaps of songs he and I could sing along to and soon enough I was playing.
Bands I’ve Been Part Of:
Influences and People I Really Dig: Aretha Franklin, Billy Joel, Bonnie Raitt, Dave Grohl, Don Henley, Elton John, Etta James, Fleetwood Mac, Janis Joplin, Joan Jett, Karen Carpenter, Linda Ronstadt, Madonna, Melissa Etheridge, Prince, Roger Clyne, Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks, and, of course, The Eagles.
That’s me… Wendy Joe.
